US FDA News: Statement from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., on developments in the romaine outbreak investigation, recent outbreaks and the use of modern tools to advance food safety
Being able to identify outbreaks is key to being able to take quick action to prevent additional illnesses and find the source of the contamination. In recent years, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have advanced new tools that make it easier and faster to identify outbreaks of human illness and to link them back to the food source that is the culprit responsible for the illnesses. But our improved ability to spot outbreaks has also caused some to question whether we are experiencing more foodborne outbreaks now than in the past.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today that U.S. Marshals, at the agency’s request, seized nearly 90,000 bottles of dietary supplements labeled as containing kratom. The product, manufactured and held by Dordoniz Natural Products LLC, located in South Beloit, Illinois, is marketed under the brand name RelaKzpro and worth more than $400,000.

US FDA News: Federal judge enters order of permanent injunction against Paul W. Franck
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that U.S. District Judge Carlos E. Mendoza entered an order of permanent injunction against Paul W. Franck of Ocala, Florida. According to the complaint filed with the consent decree, Franck manufactured and distributed drug products that were adulterated and misbranded in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). The U.S. Department of Justice brought the action on behalf of the FDA.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Exondys 51 (eteplirsen) injection, the first drug approved to treat patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Exondys 51 is specifically indicated for patients who have a confirmed mutation of the dystrophin gene amenable to exon 51 skipping, which affects about 13 percent of the population with DMD.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting consumers to Meridian Medical Technologies’ voluntary recall of 13 lots of Mylan’s EpiPen and EpiPen Jr (epinephrine injection) Auto-Injector products used for emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions. This recall is due to the potential that these devices may contain a defective part that may result in the devices’ failure to activate. The recalled product was manufactured by Meridian Medical Technologies and distributed by Mylan Specialty.
